Seinen
The literal translation of the word seinen is "youth," and generally refers to young men that are between 15 and 24 years old, although some argue that the age group extends to men up to 45 years of age.
These shows tend to be a little more violent, and can feature some psychological elements. However, there are some seinen anime comedies as well.
Some popular seinen anime features include Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Gants, Hellsing, and Berserk.
Shojo
In Japanese, shojo can be translated as "young girl." It is considered by many to be the female counterpart to shonen anime, and is targeted for girls ages 10 to 18.
Shojo usually features a female lead, and focuses more on interpersonal relationships and romantic storylines. They do still have an element of action as well.
Some famous shojo anime that you have seen or heard of include Sailor Moon, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Ouran High School Host Club, NANA, and Fushigi Yuugi.
Josei
One type of anime focused on adult women is called "josei." These types of series will feature romantic relationships or more typical "life" scenarios.
Realistic interpersonal relationships are primarily featured, versus idealized ones that are usually shown in shojo anime.
More recently, action has been more incorporated into the series, and josei anime has become more like shonen anime.

Kodomomuke
Lastly, there is kodomomuke anime, which is made for children.
These are straight-forward and imaginative stories that incorporate moral values. They feature both original story lines and other adaptations from Western literature.
